“Her singing evokes gothic opera more than teenage melodrama.” - A2Pulp

bio

❝ ❞ ✧ ೃ༄

Bekka Madeleine is an emerging singer-songwriter who imagines the young Americana with a distinctly melancholic twist. Pairing road-trip melodies with haunting lyrics, written with her sister Hannah, her voice captures the romanticism, moodiness, and hesitant hope of the new generation.

  • Bekka first started writing songs during the pandemic, while still in middle school, but her passion for music goes all the way back to her early childhood. At five years old, she began taking piano lessons and at age seven, she joined a choir in Freiburg, Germany. Upon her return to the States, she was admitted to the Ann Arbor Youth Chorale, where she was promoted to the advanced choir just a year later. Towards the beginning of her teenage years, she also took up guitar as well as voice lessons.

Once the worldwide shutdown was lifted, Bekka, then fourteen, began participating in nearby open mics: Her performances at The Ark, The North Star Lounge, and the Westside Art Hop in Ann Arbor, MI, were met with enthusiastic responses. Audience members were impressed by Bekka's musical sophistication as well as Hannah's profound lyrics. It did not take long until Bekka Madeleine was invited to play a Happy Hour at the Northstar Lounge.

On November 10th, 2023, the North Star Lounge was packed with familiar and unfamiliar faces, who enjoyed an hour of nothing but original songs. At fourteen years old, she is the venue's youngest performer to date. Immediately afterwards, Bekka was invited back by North Star Lounge to perform her very first ticketed event on April 13th, 2024.

In early 2024, Bekka released her first single 'jar of sand' on all streaming platforms. The successful song was quickly followed by another local favorite: 'love in the time of climate change.'

Bekka Madeleine's most recent performance was at the Ann Arbor Summer Festival’s Top of the Park on the Grove Stage on June 25th, 2024, and can be found in its entirety on her YouTube channel.

  • i got a letter in the mail

    just a few days ago

    it was an old one

    guess the post is getting

    kinda slow

you wrote me that you bought a house

it is right next to the beach

said the view was just amazing

and the price was pretty cheap

    letters are just letters

    until they’re invitations

    a grasp into the past

    some cheap imitation

    of a time

where the house might’ve been mine

    so before the oceans rise

let me take a quick dive

    into the deep blue love

of all those young people’s lives

    you have another twenty years

spend them all on the sand

turning rocks and counting the hours

by the sun and with your hand

by the sun and with your friends

get a million reasons not to leave

    then just leave me behind

    see a million possibilities

    pointed up at the sky

i’m thinkin’ road trips, thinkin’ flying

    thinkin’ green grass dew

i’m thinking coke and coca cola

    just to tide me through

    thinking of you

i see a hundred different pictures

    every time i sigh

my hair is pushed back by a ribbon

    and a sweet green lie

    passing the hours

    smelling the flowers

    till I reach

    what might’ve been ours

    so before the oceans rise

let me take a quick swim

    into the deep blue love

when the lights are all dim

    you have another twenty years

spend them all on the sand

turning rocks and counting the hours

by the sun and with your hand

by the sun and with your friends

get a million reasons to leave

    like you left me behind

    see a million possibilities

    reaching up towards the sky

you gotta take me or just tell me

    that it’s all for nought

gotta shake me til I’m crying

    for the love of god

    and the life you lead

i’m going back to the beach

    so before the oceans rise

let me take a quick swim

    into the deep blue love

when the lights are all dim

    you have another twenty years

spend them all on the sand

turning rocks and counting the hours

by the sun and with your hand

by the sun and with your friends

get a million reasons to leave

    like you left me behind

    see a million possibilities

    reaching up towards the sky

  • I keep count on my body

you left me in the snow

the light had just turned green

but I was busy feeling guilty

for not living in my teens

    in hindsight it was dumb

    all those afternoons sleeping

and the school days spent all worried

for some future I don’t believe in

I keep count on my body

I pretend I am an aging soldier

    kneeling on the ground

about to find out what there is

    beyond the reach of God

but then I come back to the city

and I come back to the lights

and I know I’m not at the end yet

cause I’ll always be too scared to try

I keep count on my body

I know why you left me

and why you said it when you did

just when the lights were changing

so it’d distract me for a bit

    I wouldn’t stay if I were you

    I wouldn’t come along

    if I could choose

    trust me

I’d be long and so far gone

so who am I to judge

    who am I to judge

    I’m not the freezing ocean

    I’m not even God

    who am I to judge

    who am I to judge

    who am I to judge

    I’m not even God

I keep count on my body

so who am I to judge

    who am I to judge

    I’m not the freezing ocean

    I’m not even God

I keep count on my body

  • you rang on a thursday

    the tree town was gray

    you’d gathered fresh cherries,

    picked down by the lake

    some were more sweet

    and some were more sour

    an attempt to convince me

to stay a few more hours

    to regale me with stories

    of life before I came

    of the woman who left

    and the reasons you stayed

    “people leave home for money
And they leave home for fame,
they seek skies that are sunny,
or they run off in shame.
I don’t care for the reasons
    Men travel out west,
    no matter the season —
    this home-town is best.”

    You sneered, “feel free

    to go out into cities,
    some things have more meaning
Than all they could give me.
    The false gold on horizons
    Could not repay me like
    those familiar faces here do
    That keep this home-town bright.”

i drank up my glass then

    stared down into its depth

“well, if that is all true,

then how could she have left?”

    “people leave home for money
And they leave home for fame,
they seek skies that are sunny,
or they run off in shame.
I don’t care for the reasons
    Men travel out west,
    no matter the season —
    this home-town is best.”

    he sat a bit bitter,

    then got a bit better

and shared with me her words

    written out in her letters

    his voice became hers

and my heart, it was lost

to her dream and her wishes

    and what they had cost

    “I don’t judge the people

    who wish to stay”

    she wrote in her farewell

    then went on to say

“but there’s much to be argued

    for leaving your life

    and learning to live

in a way that you like

    my home town is there

    a town that is home

    i will always return

    but can’t promise for long”

“I feel like I know her

like I have what she’s got”

    I say to my father,

    who lost his one love

“I want to follow her path

    towards cities and stars

    where culture is rich

    to gain losses and scars

    “people leave home for money
And they leave home for fame,
they seek skies that are sunny,
or they run off in shame.
I don’t care for the reasons
    Men travel out west,
    no matter the season —
    this home-town is best.”
